Aide to Senator Barbara Boxer Charged With Distributing Child Pornography

A top aide to Senator Barbara Boxer has been formally charged with the possession of and the distribution of child pornography.  Distributing child pornography is illegal in all fifty states.    Once the indictment came, Barbara Boxer fired Jeff Rosato on the spot for these charges dealing with child pornography.  Apparently child pornography can be easily traded by Google users through some sort of Google photo sharing programming.

This was the tool that Rosato is accused by authorities of using in order to trade child pornography. Rosato reportedly had worked for Boxer for three years, mainly focusing his legislative duties on strengthening the Endangered Species Act.  Rosato does not have any political contributions on record with the FEC as noted by Newsmeat.com, but he did previously work for Democratic Senator Robert Torricelli another Democrat who had to abandon his re-election bid in 2002 due to accepting bribes and a whole laundry list of charges as noted by the National Review Online.

Rosato was released after being talked to by a judge.  The records from his computer were correctly subpoenaed from Google and the other search engines Rosato had been allegedly using to access child pornography.  This once again brings to question the tight rope that Google has to walk between protecting civil liberties and protecting the most vulnerable of our citizens-children.  The San Francisco Chronicle noted that Rosato was making over one hundred and one thousand dollars a years as a top level aide.  United States Senators from California are no strangers to controversy including Alan Cranston, a Democrat who was wrapped up in the Keating Five Scandal as noted by the Associated Press.

Boxer was already facing a potential A-List of candidates within the California GOP to challenge her re-election bid.    Some of the rumored names out there include of course former actor and current California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carly Fiorina who is the former CEO of Hewlett Packard and a very well thought of economic adviser/ spokesperson for the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign as noted by the Politico.  Most political commentators are currently unsure as to what if any effect this will have on Senator Boxer’s re-election chances.  There already is a candidate in the race in Chuck Devore, the GOP Leader in the California House.

The Supreme Court has had several recent rulings on whether pornography is considered a protected form of speech under the First Amendment.    Some of these cases have dealt with things such as library filters and other questions of how much an internet search can be blocked without infringing upon someone’s rights.  These cases include the American Civil Liberties Union versus Janet Reno.

Why would this impact Boxer's re-election campaign? The action inappropriate action was not by her nor does she condone what the staff person did.

You have to speculate about her 2010 re-election somewhat just to fill space.
