3 Super Simple Ways to Save Money at the Grocery Store

Everyone is talking about it. The economy is suffering. Stocks are crashing. A gallon of milk can cost more than it ever has, and if you are among the millions of Americans on a tight budget, finding a way to save money is priceless.

Grocery shopping can be stressful and can be difficult when your budget is small. Below are some simple, but helpful tips to save you and your family money every time you make the trip to the market.

Tip #1 - Clip those coupons!
Clipping coupons can be time consuming and rather tedious, but you might be surprised how much you can save with just a little time and effort. Just do it! Check your local paper, store flier or visit your favorite coupon website and save those coupons for major savings at the check out aisle.

Tip #2 - Buy generic or store brand products.
Haven’t tested generic lately? Some store brands are made of exactly the same ingredients that the leading brand name products have. Sometimes the store brand products can truly be better than the brand names. Try some of them out and see for yourself! This can save tons every time you go to shop. Don’t forget to check out the generic products in the pharmacy as well.

Tip #3 - Keep your eyes on the register.
When your finished shopping and your standing at the register, make sure to watch the prices as they are being scanned. Many times, the items may not “ring up” correctly or at the sale price. Make sure you get the price that is advertised or the sale price. Don’t forget to use your store’s discount card if they have one available. Many cards are made to fit right on your key ring and usually provide some great deals, even on the brand name items.

Bonus Tip - Eat before you shop!
Ok, maybe it’s just me, but if I go to the grocery with my stomach rumbling, I always seem to buy more! Try to eat a little something before you shop...It might just save you a little money at the check out line.

Some good ideas, most people know them. I guess some need reminding. However, I have tried the store brand products/generics and there is no way I consider a can of store brand green beans any where near the quality of the name brand green beans. I do buy store brand paper towels for cleaning projects so not to waste the "good ones". I think store brands are something you need to try. Maybe some store brand items are ok but if I have to throw out a product that isn't a quality product then I have wasted more money than if I purchased the name brand in the first place. I guess if you have little kids they won't know the difference.

One more suggestion is to make a list, take it with you and stick to it.

I have found using coupons, bargain offers and bulk buying of toiletries to be good money savers. Taking and sticking to the list is a wonderful idea.

I follow all of your tips. You wouldn't believe how many times items haven't rung up correctly, especially on the last day of a sale. I would like to add in one more tip: Look for sales at different stores, but only shop a multiple stores if they are close together.

This is a good artcile...it's fun getting each other's tips added in also. I just returned from picking up 4 prescriptions. One was an inhaler so I was certain the bill was going to be well over $100. What a shock when I was told the bill was less than 45 dollars. Three of the scripts were gnerics so they cost a grand total of $12. I like a doctor who writes generics!!

Those are really great tips for grocery shopping. Usually we intend to do one or all of these things, but never get down to it as we seem rushed to get on with the day's schedule. This listing will help us remember to follow the tips and really save money while shopping.

Good article on personal economy! I shall take care of your tips. Always I take it that money saved is money earned. What is the use on earning more money and consuming / spending more unwisely? It is the high time to think more on personal economy and value to save a little more money wisely! Thanks.
