First Day Home with Your Puppy

It’s always great to bring home a new puppy. But it can be unpleasant if you don’t do it right. Here’s everything you need to know to make your puppy’s first day home happy.

First of all, you should try to bring home your puppy when it is 7 weeks old because after that your puppy might start missing its parents even more. But it’s perfectly fine if you don’t. I never did yet my puppy was fine.

What you need to get before your puppy comes home:

- Bed: If you want your puppy to sleep on a bed, get it before your puppy comes home so that you can train your puppy right from the first day to sleep there.

- Food & Water Bowls: These are really important to have before your puppy comes home because it’s most likely going to want to eat or drink when it comes home.

- A Collar & Leash: You can’t take your puppy out without a leash and collar so make sure you get those before you get your puppy. Make your puppy get used to wearing a collar, at least during the day.

- Toys: Dog toys are not absolutely needed on the first day but it would keep your puppy busy so it doesn’t think about its family that much.

- FOOD: Get a quality puppy food for your dog. It’s probably going to be hungry when it gets home. Your puppy might be really curious so make sure you roll up carpets, move wires, and keep anything sharp, toxic or precious out of reach.

When your puppy comes home:

-Make your puppy urinate before it comes in. You don’t want your puppy messing up your house!
-Let it get used to your house for a while. Feed it, if necessary.
-Don’t have too many people coming to see your puppy. It might get scared or excited.
-Don’t play too rough with it. It’s just a pup.
-Don’t give your puppy bones or chewy toys that are too hard as they still have milk teeth.
-Don’t leave your puppy alone or unsupervised
-Try to imagine what your puppy is going through and help it adjust.

If you follow all these rules, your puppy won’t have too hard a time adjusting and neither would you!

your article reminded me when we first got our dog (well technically he was still a pup). he wants to stay under the piano. he does not want to leave the spot. so instead of him adjusting, we are ones who adjusted. all his things (food and water included) are all placed under the piano.

btw, nicely written

That is an extremely well-written article. It encapsulates concisely all the "to do" things on the arrival of the puppy.

Another thing you have to do before your four legged companion arrives is to make your home safe for him.. Do ensure that there are no loose wires, sharp objects or jutting nails on walls, that could hurt him as he goes around the house.
