Alright I admit I’m a Republican, but I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d ever meet the vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but I did meet her, and not only that, I had dinner with Sarah Palin.
A friend of mine hooked me up on a blind date. Neither my friend nor I knew where the date was going to take place, but I was told it would be in a very secure location. I was told to dress fancy, as though I was going to my prom or homecoming, but to keep it professional looking to. This wasn’t hard to do considering I chaperone many of my alma maters dances.
Somewhat nervous and starting to feel sick, my phone rang and I was told my ride would arrive sharply at 6:45. I had a few moments to spare so I went over the belongings in my purse when before I knew it, it was 6:45 and a long black limousine was pulling up my driveway.
I went out of the house as the driver escorted me into the back, and handed me a card. No words were exchanged as I looked down to read my name on the card. Comfortably seated in the back of the limo, I poured myself a drink and opened the card to read, “I will meet you at the table at 7. Thank you again for accepting my proposal of dinner. – J.”
It was about a thirty-minute drive to the location that I still didn’t know. Upon arrival, the driver got out and opened my door, offering his hand to help assist me, as my dress was pretty long. He pointed and finally spoke “It’s through the doors and to the left, have a nice night Miss.”
Walking through the hallway I quickly realized it was a hotel, and it was a busy hotel too. Many people seemed to be going in the same direction as I was. Upon reaching the doorway, I was asked my name, and asked if I was on the list. A little shocked I provided my name, and guessed I was on the list. Attempting to enter after cleared through that was another story. A young man took my purse and went through it quickly, as another one quickly whisked a wand over my body. This all struck me as strange as I also noticed they were wearing earwigs in their ears. Obviously, it was a security team of some force for some reason. The thought then crossed my mind that I might be meeting someone from the mob, or someone with some sort of power. However, as quickly as that thought entered I batted it away, as nothing like that would ever happen to me.
I looked around the room, as I was told where my table was located. I found my name on a place setting, and sat down. The room was somewhat dark and beautiful decorated, with red white and blue balloons and ribbons. There was a master table up front with a podium in the middle and loads of round tables throughout the room. Men in tuxedos and women dressed to the nines made their way in slowly filling up the place. Several of them looked familiar, but nothing really hit me.
A couple sat down beside me and made small talk, I knew neither them nor any other persons sitting at my table, and the seat beside me was empty for what seemed like a long time. I read his name on the card at least, so I knew whom to expect. Nearly everyone had made their way to their seats when a slender, sleek, elegant, tall dark haired older man floated over to me. He shook my hand and quickly apologized, explaining how he was the managing director of the security team on duty that night, and how there was a slight problem with one of the staff members of the hotel. (Perhaps I shouldn’t be mentioning that, but seeing as I’m not mentioning any locations, and names, I think it is ok.)
He sat down and we chitchatted until someone finally walked up to the podium. I admit I wasn’t really listening to him; all that was going on around me captivated me. I had a bit too much to drink because I was so nervous, and I didn’t much care for why, or where we were. I was there to meet him, and to get to know him.. but.. just then everyone suddenly cheered, and clapped as what looked like Sarah Palin got up to the podium. She was short, too short to be the real thing I thought. But she spoke, and the crowd went wild. She thanked us for our generous support of donations by going to the dinner. She spoke about her campaign, her plans for the country, John McCain, and her family. It was almost a spiritual experience.
She sat down with her family, and we ate. Everyone was talking politics, while my date and I exchanged the usual get to know you talk.
After the dessert everyone got up walked around shook hands, took photos, went outside to smoke or the bar to drink. Sarah Palin made her way around the room to shake hands and take pictures with each, and every person there! That impressed me, and thankfully, I had my camera.
