Obama - McCain: 700 billion defining moments

There was once a time when the defining truth of a presidential election campaign was determined around a candidate’s proposals to keep Social Security alive. Clearly the3 focus of our political leaders is no longer on the well being of the American public but rather the well being of big business.

Check the historical facts to verify this statement. When was the last time our governmental representatives, our so-called public servants tried to bail out the Social Security program with a plan entailing anywhere near the 700 billion dollars estimated for the current stock market and financial institutions bail out.

When was the last time (post Depression Era) that the United States government appropriated such a large sum to end the blight of poverty in America?Senators McCain and Obama combined will spend enough money on their respective campaigns that could provide health care for a great majority of Americans.

When was the last time our government considered bailing individual citizens and taxpayers out of their bad debts? Why bail out the overpaid lenders who have much more in assets at their disposal than does the average mortgage holder?

So many questions that need simple answers. Why do our current political candidates not provide answers to these questions? Why do they not commit to truly creating change through definite solutions instead of rhetoric and campaign jargon?

Let us quit blaming every disaster and blunder on poor George W. Bush. He simply doesn’t know any better and never will. But, as American constituents, as taxpayers and as a free thinking public, we should, after some 233 years of existence as a free and democratic nation, know far, far better. Still we allow our elected officials to run around willy-nilly getting away with the shenanigans that we morally do not find acceptable. Why?

Imagine having 700 billion dollars to do with as you wish...literally. It is an idea almost unfathomable to the general public. For most it is an idea that would be very welcome in lifes’ everyday routine. Now that is a defining truth.

Great article! I wish the government would consider bailing individuals out but this will never happen. I also see most of the spending as wasteful. All of that campaign money could feed many hungry people. It's gross excess and it's disgusting.

thanks willow. Do you have any articles along these lines? I would love to read them.

I feel that people of US should start a fight to fund Social security through our tax dollars and not to bail out corrupt banks with our money. I feel everyone have to apply consistent pressure on politicians about this issue.

We must apply a much larger amount of pressure. In other (perhaps a bit less democratic counties) the people would rise up and make change. Here in American we are either too complacent or too radical. I assure you the day will come. Thanks for your note. Hang in there.

Tax money can as well go to strengthen social security. Voters can definitely put pressure on the politicians for acting upon such issues.
