Ways to Keep Your Kid’s Hydrated

Water is said to be the source of all life. That is true especially for babies and children. Even inside a mother’s womb, water helps cool core body temperature, protecting the fetus from excessive heat during pregnancy.

Did you know that children are more vulnerable to the effects of dehydration than adults? Kid’s bodies overheat more frequently, because even though they have a lower capacity for sweat, their hydration needs are not that different from adults.

As such, parents should encourage children to drink often. Aside from serving water during mealtimes, they should teach the child how to drink water even before he gets thirsty. While they are playing, they should be given water every 15 to 20 minutes.

Here are some other tips to maintain proper hydration at home:
  1. Keep track of how many glasses of water your kid’s drinks in a daily basis. Ideally, you should follow the 8 glasses rule.
  2. Pack bottled water in your kid’s lunch box. Since they can be physically active in school, it will come in handy.
  3. Serve juices and milk. They are the next best alternative to water. Even shakes, popsicles, chocolate milk and drinkable yogurts provide decent hydration.
  4. Treat your kid’s to water-filled fruits like Watermelons, Grapes and Oranges are packed with flavor and full of water.
  5. Start and end the day with water. Water is lost during sleep, so make sure your kid’s drinks something before bedtime and when he wakes.

Water Saftey
As far as water security is concerned, we should be very vigilant to monitor our children or keep orienting them as to what type of water they need to drink. Water is very important to human body, but keep in mind also that water is the primary source of illness to children or even to adults. A better water purifier at home would be best, or if you don’t have enough budget to acquire such, then have the water be boiled first before your kid’s drink it.

i admit that when i was young, well, until now, i do not drink water as much needed. but i would give my mom props. she was able to stuff me with enough liquids so as not to dehydrate.

she effectively used numbers 3 & 4. but my favorite is, and forever will be, chocolate drinks

It's really hard to make kids drink water. Especially toddlers. Your tips are very useful. I like your idea of serving fruits that's water-filled and juices as an aid in drinking water.

Great Article! Even now I don't drink enough water and as a result have some issues with dry skin, poor blood sugar control, etc... When I do drink water those problems are seriously minimized, wonder what would have happened if my parents had read an article like this when I was a kid? Oh well, I can learn from their mistakes and your article and improve my and my son's hydration habits. Thanks!
