Tom Brady Injury Leaves Top Spot Wide In NFL Wide Open
With the recent injury to superstar quarterback Tom Brady, the New England Patriots are mere mortals, and have only a marginal chance at Super Bowl victory. What teams should we now look at as the front runners?
To take over the Patriot’s place, an NFL team must have that certain swagger. They must believe that they are the absolute best that the NFL has to offer. They must have talent to be sure, but more than anything they must believe that they are the best. With the incredible success that the Patriots have had over the last several years, it came naturally.
What NFL team has that same swagger? There are a number of NFL teams that are in contention for the new crown of favorite, and believe that they will win every week. Let’s take a look at a few:
San Diego Chargers
In spite of the week one loss to the upstart Carolina Panthers, San Diego is probably the most well-equipped team to take over the mantle of favorites. They have a superstar running back in LaDanian Tomlinson, a serviceable quarterback that has tons of upside in Philip Rivers, and a defense capable of shutting down the opposition. The only real weakness in San Diego’s armor is a very mediocre receiving corps.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas certainly has all the intangibles to be the next team everyone loves to hate. They have history on their side, as well as the most talented roster top to bottom in the NFL. Tony Romo is really starting to come into his own and Marion Barber is looking like much more than just a battering ram of late.
When you sprinkle in Terrell Owens you get the best of the Cowboys as well as the worst. While not many receivers are as talented as the volatile Owens, he still brings with him a poison to the locker room that cannot be denied.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Willie Parker is looking like superman after his week one performance of three touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger also is playing quite well. The Steelers are a very well balanced team, though they are not very deep. This team certainly has the tools to take over the mantle.
These are the three primary NFL teams that should be considered Super Bowl favorites at this point in the NFL season. The injury to Brady has changed the landscape of the NFL, and nothing is going to be business as usual now.
