Are you prepared for disaster?

How many of us are really ready for something if it happens? Hurricane? Or maybe a war? One never knows what may happen are we prepared just in case? With the economy being the way it is should we buy some extra things and put it away?

Just in case if you all have not noticed there is a lot of rumors going on about 2012? Ok so one never knows what may happen then. I don't know and I am not going to say something will or wont happen. But there also is alot of high prices lately in the stores for food. I saw a can of string beans jump up over 30 cents in a month. And then you have the price of cooking oil jumping up so high its pitiful.

Are you ready if something was to happen, do you have enough food to last your family for even 2 weeks? Have you got enough water to last for 2 weeks? I know some folks may say yes. But the big thing is if it was to last longer then 2 weeks would your food and water last that long?

Some simple and cheap ways to stay prepared:

Make sure to have plenty of jugs of water. I even collect rain water and have a cover that I keep on it. This keeps bugs and trash out of it. Rain water can be used for cooking, and for baths if needed. I also keep a small childs pool in the yard always full of water it can be used for a quick bath if needed. It also can be used for the pets for water. Make sure when shopping to buy a couple of extra packages of pasta, Pasta can be cooked and eaten and its filling even if you have nothing else to go with it. I have a total of 20 pounds of pasta stored away just in case. Also make sure to have plenty of peanut butter and fruit snacks. Peanut butter will last for about 3 years on the shelf and it will give you protein you can eat a spoonful or two a day. the dried fruit snacks are a great way to get vitamin C. They also will stay for years. If you have the money buy up some extra boxes of crackers when they are buy one get one free. And you can have peanut butter and crackers for a meal if needed.

My storage contains the following are you this prepared yet? 20 pounds of Pasta, 10 pounds of rice, 150 gallons of water, 20 pounds of dry beans, 20 cans of tuna fish, 20 cans of treat meat, 10 boxes of fruit rolls, 5 boxes of crackers, 4 jars of peanut butter, 5 gallons of kerosene, 25 candles, first aid kit, flashlights, and batteries

Its also a good idea to get a radio. Better yet if you get a flashlight and radio that run on a hand crank. That way you will never need batteries and you save more storage space.

I'd never thought about fruit snacks. However, many are now full of real fruit juice and vitamins. I think many people forget about simple foods like this. Good list of items for people to have on hand.

I would love to check it out. I actually enjoy reading about 2012. You would be surprised as to what is to really happen around that time, Even Nasa has stated it will happen.

Thanks for the great list of emergency food, in case of a disaster. I have never put things away before, it is a great idea.

Not really...

I don't have enough room in my place to store emergency supplies that you need. Especially now days when there are a million different types of emergencies that can occur!

These are all great tips. I have a small corner of my basement set aside for emergency supplies. While we have never been in a real emergency we have been without water and electricity for several days a few times and that is enough to make me want to be prepared.

I never thought of this!

Thanks! We hardly think of such things, do we? But we all should think of such disaster taking place. We should at least be prepared to survive for a few days. We all are almost prepared for a 'rainy day' in financial terms but never for a disaster.

Good reminder :)

In the Philippines, its the rainy season already [a.k.a. typhoon season]. My house doesnt even have a handy-dandy set of spotlights ready in case of power failure. I guess that makes us unprepared. I always remind my parents about these items, but they kept on being misplaced. *sigh*

Is 2012 about the Fatima? I find it scary but I don't like to think that it will happen so I'm not preparing for it.. I feel like if I prepare for it, I'm thinking positively so it might happen. But I do stock some food and water. I also have batterries and candles but I don't think of it as preparing for disasters.

wow this article is extremely informative. in my home we don't prepare at all. i know it sort of irresponsible but sometimes we just don't have the money or the resources. but when it's hurricane season we are always prepared. i will surely take wat you have said into consideration. i'm pretty young but i like o think ahead and its good to be informed so thank for this great article

You have all that pasta - are you talking uncooked pasta? If so, and there is no power how do you plan to cook it? It would be better to have prepared foods in cans that you can use an old fashioned can opener to open the cans and the food can be eaten cold.

Also remember that food has a self life, even canned foods....be sure to rotate your supplies even though I think you are beyond extreme.
