Hang on an Edge of a Cliff : I was so close to death

I’m going to tell you about a moment I’ll never forget in my life. This happened to me last year. I went on a road trip with my friends to a mountain area known as Nuwara-Eliya, Sri Lanka. We all were about 21-22 of age. It seemed like an ordinary road trip since we enjoyed so much of it. We spent about four days there, hiking, roaming, doing all kinds of stuff and it was time to make our way back.

We had to make a choice. We could easily avoid mountain roads by returning in lower highway via Rathnapura to Kandy. But we always wanted to face a challenge. So we chose the Nuwara-Eliya Road. Local people said don’t go that way. There’s gonna be mist all over the area. You won’t be able to see your own hands. Yep, and we replied, We don’t wanna see our hands, only the road. So we left at about 1pm.

It was smooth ride until a half way of it. At about 6pm the mist started to show up. They were right. We couldn’t even 5 feat ahead even with the fog lights on. If we went 1 foot off the road we would have fallen into a 1000ft cliff. There were about 5 in our Mitsubishi Pajero. There was no way we could spend the night. So we decided to keep going. We kept going very slowly down the road. Suddenly our vehicle shook hardly. We couldn’t realize what happened at once. After few chaotic moments we figured out what happened to us. Our vehicle went off the road and balanced on the verge of a cliff. I engaged 4 wheel drive at once and locked the wheels and told everybody not to move. We were terrified. If we slip a single inch we would be fallen into an unknown precipice.

I slowly shifted to reverse gear and tried to move back the vehicle. But all the four wheels are on air. I knew we wouldn’t have much time. Even a gust of wind could push us down. I told all my friends to move to rearest seat. Luckily rear end touched ground. So we could take ourselves back on the road. We spent whole night in our vehicle. As the sun rises fog was started to lessen. The stiff was about 600-900ft deep. People call places like this ‘The end of the world’. We figured out it was a miracle we saved.

What would have happened if my speed was 5 points more ?

That's what old people would surely call as the folly of youth. The locals - who know the place well - told you not to pass that way but you did. Being young myself, I know how it is to feel the thrill of a challenge but I know that you have learned a lot from your experience. I hope that young (or even old) readers of your article will see that underneath the story is a very great moral lesson. Thank you for the opportunity to learn a lesson this great without us having to experience the same thing. And I know that you know this already but let me say it: You are really lucky to be alive after that experience.

Wow. Close call. I can't even imagine being in a situation like that, especially with my fear of heights. I'm just glad everyone made it out all right.

It is great that you thought of the 5 wheel drive and to get everyone in the back. Most people couldn't think that clearly in such a terrifying time.
