Informative Post is Back Online
AAAAAANNNNND, we're back! After 5 days of waiting, the Informative Post
is back online and ready to go with a new host, and domain registrar.
In lue of recent events, many of you know that I have been getting
overly frustrated with the Informative Post's old host company. They
shut us down for causing too much server load. The first time they did
it, I forgave and forgot. The second time they did it, I packed my
files and databases up, and headed out the door!
I decided to
move to a new host company called
DreamHost because of one of my
influential Internet friends whom I respect greatly recommended them to
me. That I know of, the host has no past record of shutting sites down
without notice unless breaking the host's terms of service contract.
What
made this process more grueling however was changing the Informative
Post's domain registrar over to
GoDaddy.com. The only reason I did this
was because I love their domain management utilities and tools, and I
wanted it to be the place where I can manage all my domains.
Changing
domain registrars normally takes between 3-5 business days though, so
that is what most of the wait was from. I had the site and it's
databases over to DreamHost immediately, but changing the domain
registrar took a little while. If none of the above makes sense, it
doesn't matter. What does matter is that the site is back up and
running!
I tried to keep everyone informed about what was going
on with the Informative Post as best I could either through
Twitter or
email. I hope no one is so upset that they have left the Informative
Post or worse yet, thought the site was down for good! I haven't got
much sleep recently, because of worries that I would lose the community
that I have built here. I am impressed of the quality authors that this
site has brought together and I hope that I can bring other people who
are looking for content to the quality authors that I have here today.
Thank
you for coming back, and I hope to make it up to all of you in the
coming months. I have a lot of plans for this site to further it's
growth and the community's growth. If any of you have any questions,
like always, I have an open door policy and would love to hear from you.

DreamHost is notorious for overselling their servers to ridiculous levels, then cutting off anyone who uses any significant amount of CPU.
That said, I'm happy that IP is back online.
The other option (if shared hosting doesn't work out), is to use a VPS. They usually occupy the price point between shared and dedicated hosting, and offer guaranteed resources (a good thing for a popular site like IP.) With a well-tuned mysqld and httpd you could likely fit IP on a $20/month VPS with no issues.
