Pets on the Cheap

If you're looking for a new pet, you might be interested to know that there are a number of ways that you can get a new animal companion without spending a lot of money.

Animal shelters.  Animal shelters provide a valuable service, taking in stray and unwanted animals and providing a safe, sheltered home for them.  Unfortunately, their capacity is not infinite, and they're not set up to accommodate a large number of animals for an indefinite period of time.  Therefore, animal shelters are often quite willing to give away healthy animals to a good home.  If you can provide a cat, dog, or other pet with a safe and loving home, then you can probably get one from an animal shelter for free (or close to free -- you might have to pay for vaccinations and paperwork first.)

Classified ads.  Many people end up giving away pets "free to a good home" through the local classified ads.  Whether it's someone who's moving and can no longer take care of their pet, or someone who's developed an allergy, there are often a number of pet owners who are willing to part with an animal, provided that you can keep it in a good environment.  If you can, then you can often get a pet for absolutely no money down.

Lastly, consider placing a wanted ad.  Many pet owners are stuck in a state of indecision: they don't want to place a "free pet" ad for moral reasons, but they'd feel bad giving their beloved pet to an animal shelter.  If you place a classified ad in your local paper stating that you'd be willing to take on the responsibility of taking care of a pet, some of these people might come forward and offer you one.  You'll be doing these owners (and the pets) a service, and you won't be out much more than the cost of the classified ad itself.

These are just a few suggestions: there are several other ways that the resourceful owner can get a pet with little to no expense.

thanks for this article, and thanks for mentioning Animal Shelters. I used to run a cat rescue service in England and we were often full to overflowing with unwanted cats and kittens. We only charged £20.00 for a kitten, which then gave the owner a neutering voucher, so that when the kitten reached 6 months of age it could be neutered by our vet, thus ensuring that the unwanted cat population did not get any larger.

In our place, there are people who roam around carrying puppies or chicks for sale. If we buy it, we take the risk of owning a disastrously bred dog. But then again, we don't care.

Adoption is a wonderful way to bring a new companion into your life. And it's not just small animals like cats and dogs, there are many horses available for good homes.
