Is technology changing our lives for better or worse?

Is technology really good for us? Yes it has enabled us to do more, communicate with people all over the world, cured people, the list is endless. However what about the negative impact that technology has had on peoples lives?

For instance technology has led people to become alot lazier, therefore leads to problems such as being overweight or even obesity. Which then in turn can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. All these new technologies such as Ipods, Play Stations, Mp3 players, Internet, Itoys, X boxes has become so  popular particularly amongst children that they are doing a lot less activity. No longer are they enthusiastic about playing games outside or sports. Whereas in the past children use to play on the streets all day long, ride bikes, play footy, tiggy, hide and seek and many more fun games.

In addition these new forms of technologies have also led children to become more antisocial as they don't communicate as much to each other as most of these activities that they are engaging in are solo activities. Therefore they are not interacting as well with each other and can lead some children to become isolated.

Other forms of technology such as mobile phones can and do have a negative impact on people. It has changed the way people communicate with each other. It is becoming more popular to text someone rather then call them. This means there is less verbal communication going on. Some people have also misused text messages and bullied others or even broke up a relationship. This can have serious impacts on ones self esteem.

Furthermore the internet, can become very addictive to some people. They can spend nearly all their waking hours on the internet. This can have a detrimental impact on their family as they are often neglected or forgotten about. It can cause communication break downs and may even lead some people to become antisocial. The internet also has other negative issues, where people become addicted to gambling or porn. These form of addictions have serious effects and effect a lot of people.

In conclusion, technology is rapidly changing by the day. It is important to not let it take over your life completely where you withdraw from the world and forget to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. In moderation, technology can be very convenient and useful to many people.

I used the internet like almost 24/7 in the past. Yah, it can be addicting sometimes but it has its benefits like free info and online jobs. I stopped being an internet fanatic when I got sick due to stress.

A really bad routine!

@ 5:25 am 07/05/08 by Ardi J.
Technology can really be sometimes helpful, just like you said. But, I often feel pitty for some children who got used to technology so much that they never get out. Their parents must do something about it, because if parents aren't able to manage the time they spend in front of computer or internet, who else will? I think that this is a result that parents are becoming easier and easier to their children. I say that they should strictly manage their "technology fun".
As for the grown-ups, I don't feel that sorry about them. I think that they are able to look after theirselves and it's their own fault why they become couch potatoes instead of doing some exercises.

My Fave Example of Technology\'s Bad Effects

@ 5:28 am 07/06/08 by littlepinoy
My favorite example of the worse thing that technology has an effect on us is . . . we develop very poor handwriting! Hehehe. With the usage of computers and cellphones as our main ways of communication, our hands are not used to writing anymore. Caligraphy is now considered an extinct art. Long are the days when people write loveletters or friendship letters and send it via snail mail.

It truly change the routine of every individual. In a family for example, some could hardly find to gather as complete family in their living room and spend time talking. You can see each member of the family busy with their own PC, ipods or cellphone. it affects the closeness of the family too.

I'm a bit of the opposite. The more high tech things get, the more I somehow go back to the old school way of things. :) Not that I'm anti-technology. I love it, actually. It enables me to keep connected with my family scattered all over the country and world. I am able to share my work to more people and get feedback from them to improve my craft.

I suppose it depends on the person really. I have heard of so many people who throw away their lives because of the attraction they have to the Internet. A healthy balance of online and offline life helps, I suppose, especially if family and friends are there to support.

As with all inventions, technology can be used for benefit and disadvantage. When the first airplane was finally ready and people could fly, I dont suppose anyone at that time thought about dropping bombs from airplanes. Any advance can be used for its negative or positive effects. This depends on choices that are made, either by institutions and governments (such as using splitting the atom for making energy or for destruction) and choices made by individuals (such as using the internet to communicate instantly with family members all over the world or completely ignoring your family because you are on the internet). Ultimately technology is a neutral thing and it is natural that it develops new ideas and techniques, it is the choices that are made about how to use technology that may be positive or negative.
