Getting Into the Online Gaming Business

Over the last several years, online games have been growing in popularity.  Rather than forcing users to download and install large software packages, these Flash-based games allow users to get a quick fix of the puzzle, action, or strategy gameplay that they need.  Their fast load times, simple gameplay mechanics, and easy fun have made casual gaming into a multi-million dollar market.  If you've ever thought of starting a for-profit website, then casual gaming is a great market to get into.

Interested in starting your own casual gaming site?  Here's what you'll need:

1) Find the popular online games.  Out of the hundreds of new Flash games produced, only a handful will have a gameplay balance that's good enough to hook most people.  Find these games and publish them (or the inevitable clones).

2) Build your site.  You could build your site by hand, the old-fashioned way, but several months down the road, you'll find site maintenance to be overwhelming.  Instead, look into various CMS packages that will handle the task of managing your site's pages.

3) Promote your site.  Learn how to optimize your site for search engine traffic.  Post links to your site in gaming forums and in gaming discussion groups.  Become a respected member of a gamin community, and then start mentioning your URL.

4) Keep up with the times.  Casual games don't have the same "staying power" as your standard FPS or RTS, so it's crucial that you provide your visitors with a regularly updated selection of games, lest they get bored of your site and move away.

5) Advertise.  Make sure that your site is monetized, and that banner ads (and text ads) are properly placed for maximum exposure.  Be careful though: if you have too many ads, or make them too annoying, you'll start to alienate your visitors.

Starting an online gaming site is a simple, fast, easy way to get a share of the profits from the rapidly-growing casual gaming industry.  Follow these tips, invest some time into your site, and you may soon find yourself with hundreds or even thousands of dollars of ad revenue a month.

Make money fast vs create value

@ 2:48 pm 06/25/08 by A gamer
Just wanted to add one thing. If you want to earn money fast you don't even need to make a nice site. Do as above, but put a lot of ads on your site, and put them in central places. You wount create any great value, but you will start making money fast and your CPM will be around 5 dollars. But of course, you can't sell your site for many millions, you can just sell the discounted cash flow.

I once wanted to set up my own gaming site, but that was just an old plan to me. If I ever have time to do something like this, I will set up a gaming website, and it's all because you persuaded me to make one, because it might come in handy when it comes to money!

To "A Gamer" (I didn't reply to it because it wasn't working with this browser)

I don't know about that. I have seen so many sites like that and I never really liked them. They seemed to me more like scam sites. The autor, Mr. U is right. You have to make firstly the website attractive and only than you can post ads and anything. Because otherwise it would just seem a normal site.

You could also add a forum to your game site or a comment section beneath each flash game to increase the feel of the site as well as make it a community.
