Touch Screen Comes to the PC

The all new HP TouchSmart IQ770 PC brings touch screen to the home PC, a much anticipated move. The screen is 19” and the system is based on Windows Vista. The computer has a built in microphone, camera, and for the first time, a Drawing table. Hp has listed these key features in this all new gadget:
  • AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-52
  • 2048MB DDR2 SDRAM system memory
  • 320GB hard drive
  • Slot-loading SuperMulti DVD burner2 with LightScribe technology
  • Touch enabled 19" diagonal widescreen BrightView LCD
  • NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphics card with 256MB dedicated video memory (Up to 528MB Total Available Graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista.)
  • Integrated 1.3-megapixel HP WebCam with built-in array microphone
  • HP SmartCenter Button to launch interactive mode with one touch
  • NTSC TV tuner and over-the-air ATSC high-definition television tuner
  • Wireless keyboard and mouse, stylus, and Media Center Remote Control

The computer comes with a one year warranty and a 24 hour helpline. Also notice it does come with a mouse and keyboard, just in case.

Its style is mind blowing. Its sleek piano black frame goes well with a Z shaped holder, and it has a photo printer on the base. The base has a bay for Pocket media drives, allowing you to carry around your data. I can imagine families on the computer having trouble with keeping young kids from playing with it, then again this fun side could be seen as a selling point. Either way, this is a leap forward in the world of PC's, and I'm sure apple and others will be quick to follow suit. The PC is also a DVD player and a media center.

When not in use the keyboard snugly fits into a compartment in the base of the PC. HP have made the base unit very compact, but we soon realized with wires attached it can get quite messy at the back. It's also strange of HP to attack the monitor to the Base, but this is done purely to weigh the screen down.

So, what are the bad points? Well, weighing the screen down to HP means 17.3kg of heavy metal. It means it's not extremely portable, so TV is to be watched in the study. The price of 1300GBP ($2600) is expensive by any standard, but that's what you have to pay for a new ground breaking computer these days. The cooling system makes a large racket and may ruin your TV experience as well.

All in all, I think this is a fun and innovative idea capable of selling well; however the only time I would be buying one is if my computer crashes and I win the lottery. The price tag of 300GBP is what one would expect of this new concept of PCs, but it is expensive for the average person. We can only wait and see, but I reckon this will go down well with big families with little kids.

My Verdict: Get it if you have just won the lottery.

I have just realised that the price should be $26000 not $2600.
