Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge for more than 1,000 football matches for Manchester United, and is considered one of the best English football Managers of all time. He has won more trophies than any other manager in the history of English football and is the second-longest serving manager in the history of Manchester United after Sir Matt Busby. Alex Ferguson grew up in Govan attending Govan High School and supported Rangers.

He began as an amateur at Queen's Park, making his debut at 16 as a striker. He scored in his first match - although he decribed it as a nightmare. He scored reguarly at Queens Park, but was rarely played and moved to St.Johnstone. But it was the same story there - Loads of goals, but no time on the pitch. Although in a match against rangers, the manager had no choice but to put Ferguson on. In a suprise victory for St. Johnstone, Ferguson scored a hatrick, was recognised by Dunfermline and became a full time professional footballer.

The 1965/66 season saw Ferguson notch up 45 goals in 51 games for Dunfermline. He was signed for Rangers later, and moved clubs after a few scandals - which saw the end of his playing career. And then it started. Ferguson Managed St Mirren and various other clubs, until he landed himself a job at Aberdeen. There was early dissapointment, with Aberdeen coming second in the league again. But then finally, silverware. They started off the next season poorly - but pulled it back to go and win the league.

Finally, Ferguson had confidence. Ferguson led Aberdeen to even greater success the following season (1982-83). They had qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup as a result of winning the Scottish Cup the previous season, and impressively knocked out Bayern Munich, who had beaten Tottenham Hotspur 4–1 in the previous round. Aberdeen believed they could go on and win it - and they did. They beat Real Madrid in the final, 2-1.

Ferguson then moved onto Manchester United. This year they won title number 10 - And Ferguson is now considered one of the best. His manager style is an inspiration. Amongst all the false glamour of football, the huge salarys and scandals, Ferguson employs a simple tactic: My way, or the Highway. It's great to see how much success and discipline it's brought him with his players, and I look forward to Manchester Uniteds upcoming clash with Chelsea.
