Roger Federer

Roger Federer. 12 Grand slam wins. Ranked World No. 1 since February 2, 2004, for a record 224 consecutive weeks. Some critics consider him to be the greatest player in history. Where did it all begin?

Roger Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland. As a boy, whilst practising tennis he was very emotional, and occasionally kicked off courts in training. He was also a very talented football
player, and nearly tried to become a proffesional footballer - but thankfully, pursued tennis instead. He continues to support FC Basel, his hometown club and is a fan of Italian club AS Roma.

Federer started playing tennis at the age of six.He began participating in group lessons at the age of nine and began weekly private coaching when he was ten. He stopped playing football
at the age of twelve, to focus on tennis solely. At 14, he became national champion of all groups in Switzerland. He was chosen to play at the Swiss National Tennis Center in Ecublens.
Then, in 1998, as his final year as a junior Federer won the junior Wimbledon title and the prestigious year-ending Orangle Bowl.

In 2001, he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, defeating four-time defending champion and seven-time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round. it was a well fought match, and I consider it to be the turning point in his career. In 2002 Federer suffered the loss of his coach, in a car crash. He crashed out of the French open, the US open and Wimbledon early. But despite this, he fought on and Federer reached No. 6 in the ATP Champions Race by the end of the year and thus qualified for the first time in the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup.

In 2003 Federer finally began his campaign for top rakings, and managed to Win Wimbledon. Now, he is considered the master of the grass court, having won 5 Winbledon tournaments in a row. His playing style is versatile, but he loses to Nadal on clay. I can't wait for Wimbledon this year, it should be an interesting tournament to watch.
