The Beijing Olympics
This year, the summer olympics will be celebrated in Beijing. "Beijing 2008" will be
celebrated from August 8, 2008, to August 24, 2008, with the opening ceremony commencing at 08:08:08 pm. It will commence at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China.
Not all events will be held in Beijjing ; Football (soccer) and sailing will be held all over China. China found out taht they would be hosting the event on July 13, 2001.
The official logo of the games hasn't recieved much criticsm. Unlike the Lodon 2012 logo of course. The logo, titled "Dancing Beijing", features an edited caligriphic character. The character (jing) means capital, referencing the host city.
But there have been a lot of protests regarding the Olympics. A group called "Students for a free tibet" are using the olympic games as a chance to draw attention to China's occupation of Tibet. They have said that as the spotlight is on Beijing, the Chinese government must be pressured to free Tibet.
Because of this, China's human rights record, the war in Darfur, and the political status of Taiwan, the Torch relay has been disrupted - a lot. In Paris the torch had to be put out a number of times by officials due to too much disruption. There were tens of thousands of protesters in San Francisco - Although none in places like Pyongyang. These protests have caused the relay to take shortcuts and miss out places altogether. The protests in Europe were described as "despicable" by the Chinese government, condemning them as "deliberate disruptions ..who gave no thought to the Olympic spirit or the laws of Britain and France"
Now, any athletes displaying Tibetan flags during the games could be expelled completely.
Everyone's opinions are different. Although the issues being raised are worth thinking about, is it really their place to spoil the olympics? Olympic officials can only hope that the actual event will be less of a catastrophe.
