Beta Testing Brightkite.com

Brightkite.com is a new web service for people who want to get more out of their cellphones. Brightkite is currently in private beta testing, but it is fairly easy to find an invitation through Twitter, Facebook, and various other social networks.

Brightkite offers a very unique service. Brightkite allows users to "check in" at a location via their cellphone. A short SMS message in the format of "@City, State" is all it takes. You can go into as much or as little detail as you want.

Now, here's where things start to get cool. Let's say I've checked in at Atlanta, GA. While in Atlanta, I stop by the local Applebee's for dinner and drinks with some friends. I don't know the address of the restaurant, but I want my friends on Brightkite to know where I am in case they want to join me. So I send an SMS message from my phone saying, "?Applebee's." Within moments Brightkite responds with an SMS message listing off the Applebee's in the area by number, and all I have to do is reply to that message with the corresponding number, and Brightkite updates my location. Now all my friends know where to find me tonight. I never have a hard time finding a dinner and drinks group now.

Brightkite also allows “placemarks.” With these you can turn an address into an easy short cut such as “work,” or “home.” Brightkite also makes finding friends easy, with full Twitter integration.

Brightkite can be as simple or as complicated as you like. You can post pictures and messages about your location by SMS. Brightkite also remembers the places you've been, helping you keep a travel log of sorts.

An excellent web service with a fast future. Be sure to check out their website, http://brightkite.com to sign up for the private beta.
