Lara and the History of Cricket
He says its must be Brian Lara on the history of cricket as the highest test score in an test inning. Sir Gary Sober's knock of unbeaten 365 at Kingston in 1958 was on the top list for almost 36 years until Brian Charles Lara(WI) broke it with a knock of 375 runs in 1994 at St. John's in West Indies, and held the record for 9 years until Matthew Hayden(AUSTRALIA) broke the record but his record didn't last too long. However, Brian Charles Lara rewrote the history again by surpassing the record of 380 by M Hayden and making 400. In the process of doing so he not only became the highest run score in an inning in test arena but also became the only batsman to score 400.
He went to make unbeaten 400 against England at Antigue on April 10th 2004. West Indies side were facing a prospect of an unprecedented home series whitewash as they were 3- 0 down in the test series. But, it was the captain Lara who was leading the team as a skipper and made a word with his bat. When he reached 400 mark West Indies and England players crowded round to offer their congratulations. He punched the air with his bat then fell to his knees to kiss the turf. This is the moment that no one would forget in his life and Lara would remember until he lives.
The West Indian captain, who holds the highest first-class score of unbeaten 501 for warwichshire, now with Australian's Don Bradman and Indian Virender Sehwag as the only man to score two Test triple centuries when he brought up his record inning of 400.
Lara epic's has underwritten the most improbable of comebacks in history of games. The legendary cricketer has retired from all forms of cricket in 2007.
