Tejano Singer Emilio Cool Recovery

Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 was marked by a tragic mishap that led to the hospitalization of the famed Tejano music star Emilio Navaira.

Emilio and his band El Rio had finished a musical engagement at local night club Hullabaloos in South Houston, Texas. heading out on the road on Interstate 45, events still unknown to police led to Emilio's tour bus crashing. The result was a severely injured Emilio.

Emilio suffered from a number of broken bones but more seriously was his injury to the head plus a rare condition consisting of an aneurism next to his lung. Doctors in Houston were successful in their efforts to contain the aneurism by inserting a type of coil in the blood vessel to relieve pressure. The doctors had also decided to use a relatively unproven but very innovative and promising procedure to help the situation. This procedure involves the cooling or lowering of a patient's body temperature allowing the body to slow down bodily functions lessening the impact of the injury and increasing the body's focusing of its energies to recuperation.

Albeit known for many years, there is still not enough direct clinical proof of this cooling procedure having tangible results. However, several cases previously involving this method of recuperation in Houston hospitals has had very positive results: the patients are alive and doing well.

What is the future of body cooling in modern medicine? The possibilities are in fact many. Just imagine how many serious trauma patients might have a chance of extended life? How many disease ridden bodies might last long enough for medications to do their work more effectively? How many triage units might be better able to save lives?

This is the old idea of cryogenics once removed. Instead of preserving the body for a later date to be reawakened, this procedure merely postpones a physical event long enough for a definite outcome to be determined. It is almost like a game of chess with life and death....the move of death to checkmate does not count until you remove your hand from the chess piece in question.

Emilio receives all the well wishes of his fans, his people, and more. The situation was dire. His recovery will undoubtedly bring needed attention to this innovative process. Enough perhaps to make it more common place and thus more certain of positive outcomes.

It has been a month since that fateful day. Family, friends and doctors are excited by singer Emilio's fantastic recovery. Only time will tell us if Emilio will again perform for his adoring fans. The outlook is hopeful.
