MAQ T20 Coming to South Florida
American’s large immigrant population has always played a huge part in American life and culture. Food, clothing, and accents are all eventually integrated into the larger American way of life. The last thing to be accepted by other Americans is one of the things that we hold closest, sports. Call it stubbornness or pride but Americans do not like to accept a sport that is new to them, despite how old it might be in the rest of the world.
This has been a particular road block for the many residents of the United States that play the most illustrious of sports—cricket. Even though cricket is played just about everywhere else in the world, finding support for cricket players in the United States is hard to do. Local teams are few and far between, and finding a field near you can be difficult. This is especially true in my home state of Florida. With our large immigrant population from the islands, it is surprising that there has yet to be a large cricket presence, especially in South Florida.
All of this will be changed come Memorial Day weekend 2008. Cricket Council USA has decided to hold the MAQ T20 International Cricket Tournament in a brand new, state of the art facility in Lauderhill Florida. The facility is absolutely stunning and adds the much need cricket influence to South Florida. The MAQ T20 Tournament will showcase cricketers from all corners of the world, including India, Pakistan, and the West Indies.
The event is sure to be one that will be remembered for a long time to come. The three day event will also be coupled with a series of concerts, fireworks displays, and food stalls from every country represented in the games. It should be a great weekend for all that attend. I hope to see you at Lauderhill!
