Types of Commonly Used Graphics
Graphics not only depict a pictorial expression of something, they actually "express" what is intend to be shown to us. Therefore, good graphics easily express their message and poor ones are considered just some form of pictures. There are many types of graphics used in desktop publishing and on web graphical interface. All of them make use of "pixels" in general that are a standard form of expressing size and quality of various graphics.
1. JPG/JPEG: This is the most commonly used form that has been in use since long. JPEG/JPG is the abbreviated form of Joint Photographic Experts Group/Joint Photographic Group. This format does not support transparency and can actually support nearly 16.7 million colors. The form of compression used in making JPG/JPEG images is lossy. Therefore, the quality of image decreases every time it is saved in this format.
2. GIF: This is another one in use where slightly animated formats are required. As the name itself explains, GIF means Graphic Interchange Format. It supports around 256 colors and transparency as well. Almost all the web browsers support GIF formats, therefore, they are considered a better option for web-based images. The size is of the image is quite small due to its compression.
3. PNG: PNG depicts Portable Network Graphics and came into use after Adobe Fireworks was launched. The main format for image compression used in Adobe Fireworks was PNG. PNG uses a comparatively lossless form to compress images as compared to other two forms, therefore, when converting from PNG to JPG or GIF, image quality is better than when the opposite is done.
4. BMP: BMP or Bit Map is a graphic file format used to store digital images. Microsoft for Windows users launched it.
5. SVG: SVG or Scalable Vector Graphics is a graphic format for vector graphics. Vector graphics are a special type of graphics that represent pictures as an array of pixels and for the same can be viewed at any image size without losing its quality. They are typically used for presenting photographic images and are an advanced format of producing graphics.
There are many other forms of compressing or storing various images too apart from the above-mentioned ones. However, any basic image software supports any of the above types except the Vector graphics are not supported by all of them. Whenever, you want to make some presentation in graphical form, try to save your file in the appropriate form as per your presentation requirements. This will save the quality of the original work and provide the appropriate file size. For example, for simple images that need no transparency, use JPG/JPEG format, for images to use on some web interface, prefer GIF formats. If you want to produces graphics carrying high image quality, without worrying for the file size, choose between PNG or SVG format.
