UN: Global Warming-A Serious Threat
In his message marking this year's World Health Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the ever changing climate is causing more frequent and more severe storms, heat waves, droughts and floods and is affecting the quality and availability of water and food - ''Our fundamental determinants of nutrition and health.''
There was a need to ''give voice to this often-overlooked reality, ensuring that protecting human health is anchored at the heart of the global climate change agenda,'' Ban said.
He said that the world's poor contributed the least to climate change and global warming, but unfortunately they are the ones who will bear the brunt of its effects. The ever changing climate poses a serious danger to humans and if measures are not taken to control this change, then the effects could be disastrous.
The oceans too are gradually losing their rainforests-the ever abundant coral reefs which are susceptible to even a small rise in sea temperature. Coral reefs are present in large numbers in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and are called the rainforests of the oceans as they serve as a breeding ground for a large variety of marine organisms. Destruction of these coral reefs will affect marine organisms like fishes, crustaceans etc. In 1998 when the warm El Nino ocean current hit the Indian Ocean, it caused the death of millions of corals and this in turn resulted in the death of millions of marine organisms. If we do not take steps to prevent this, then the world is at risk.
Malnutrition and climate related diseases could take a heavy toll on small children and the elderly. It could especially effect developing countries and retard their growth.
Stating that, ''climate change is real, it is accelerating and it threatens all of us,'' Ban called for collective action to combat the scourge for the sake of the planet as well as for those inhabiting it.
On the occasion, Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) said ''The core concern is succinctly stated: climate change endangers human health''.
