Adam Craig Gilchrist, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman of Australia, was born on November 14, 1971, in Bellingen, New South Wales. He was an indispensable member of the Australian cricket team till he announced his retirement from the international arena in the early 2008. He has been one of the most attacking batsmen the great game of cricket has seen. His wicket keeping has always been impeccable making him reach newer milestones again and again. His ultimate international appearance was during the last test match against India in the 3Mobile Test series, in March 2008, at the Adelaide ground. That test match saw him setting a new world record for the maximum number of dismissals by a wicket keeper. Gilchrist had a reputation of having an honest intent and walked when he himself thought that he was out. He has not only done so to help a confused and silent umpire but has also countered the umpires decisions on a few occasions.
Career:
Gilly, as he was referred to by his teammates, made his One Day International debut playing against South Africa in Faridabad, in the year 1996. This was followed by his first Test appearance in 1999 versus Pakistan in Brisbaine. His brilliant international career has seen him play more than 265 One-Day Internationals and 96 Tests.
Since the year 2000, the Australian team had Gilchrist as the vice-captain in both the one-day and the five-day forms of the game.
Gilchrist in Test matches:
a) He has scored the maximum number of Test centuries by a wicket keeper. He reached this record when he scored his 17th Test century.
b) He holds the record of the second highest number of Test dismissals by a wicket keeper. He reached this record when he had his 416th Test victim.
c) He holds the record of the second quickest Test century. He is holding this record since December 16, 2006 when he assaulted the English bowling attack on his way to 100 runs from 57 balls.
d) He holds the record of hitting the maximum number of sixes in an international Test career. He has 100 sixes to his name.
e) He has captained the Australian Test team on six occasions, in the absence of the regular captain. The team had registered one draw, one loss and four victories under his captaincy.
Gilchrist in One-Day Internationals:
a) He holds the record of the maximum number of One-Day International hundreds by a wicketkeeper. He reached this milestone when he made his 15th century.
b) He holds the record of the maximum number of ODI dismissals by a wicketkeeper. He reached this record when he got his 455th ODI victim.
c) His highest ODI score has been of 172 runs made at Hobart, during the 2003-04 season playing against Zimbabwe.
d) The record of, the second fastest ODI hundred by any Australian cricketer is, also owned by Gilchrist. This record belongs to him since February 14, 2006, when he scored 100 runs from 67 balls, against Sri Lanka.
Among the many honors and accolades which came his way throughout his international career, a very special one came in 2002, when he was adjudged one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
