Reasons You Can’t Find a Good Employee
I so often hear the cries of business men and women who say “Please, just send me one good employee!” Why does it seem like all the people you are looking to employ are not who you want? I especially hear for those who want to recruit the younger generation, the innovative minds of the computer age. So the question becomes, why can’t anyone find a decent employee?
The Education System
One of the biggest reasons you can’t find talented young employees is what these students are learning in schools. More and more emphasis is placed on students performing to the regulations of state examinations and it is causing students to learn the test and not any real curriculum. Couple this with the fact that students are no longer taught respect in schools and you end up with graduates with no real world knowledge.
In the old days, students were expected to address their teachers respectfully, not talk back, do their homework, and take notes. Now, students are so used to having everything spoon fed to them that they end up with no sense of responsibility or respect. Where did please and thank you, sir and ma’am go in the education system? They have disappeared, along with the courtesy of the younger generation.
Money
The United States is in a recession and just about everyone is scrambling for money. Your 25 year-olds and younger are looking for college and party money, the 25-36 set is looking for money for their family, and everyone else is trying to pay off their debt (be it credit cards, loans, or mortgages). This leads to people seeing their job as only a way to get the money they need, leading to subpar work on many occasions. Unless you can find an employee with a passion for the job, you will be forced to live with mediocre results.
What to do?
Well really, what can you do? If we could change the education system and end the recession, we would defiantly see a change. Since we can’t do that on demand, the best thing to do is find a way to retrain your potential employees. Encourage your new and current employees to institute a new standard of respect. Sir and ma’am should be used and profanity should not be tolerated. Also, since you can’t stop money from being a main motivator, find a way to reward employees who go above and beyond. Take the Google approach and give your employees time to work on projects alone. Rewarding those who do something new and innovative should help shift attitudes from being completely money oriented.
