4 Common Cold Myths: Avoid Doing These Things When You Get Hit By the Cold or Flu Bug

Did you know that more than 200 viruses can lead to the common cold? Every year when the fall/winter season comes and brings the cold and flu along with it, people will try anything to get relief. Some of those things include the perpetuation of common cold myths that don't actually help. In this article, I'll reveal fact from fiction with four common cold myths.

First Common Cold Myth

When you can sense a cough or a sneeze coming, do you cover it with your hands? Doing that will only spread the germs around on everything you touch. Take out a tissue instead, or if one isn't available, then turn away from others around you as best as you can and sneeze or cough in the crook of your arm at the elbow.

Second Common Cold Myth

If you think nasal decongestants will get rid of your cold, think again. They will help you feel better by reducing the size of the mucous membranes, which allows you to breathe easier. A warning about the sprays and decongestants that promise to give you twelve hour relief: since you still need to continually use it to keep feeling decongested, you can develop a bit of an addiction to them.

Third Common Cold Myth

If you've heard the expression of feed a cold and starve a fever, then don't follow that advice literally. When you get hungry while having a cold and/or a fever, eat healthy and in moderation. Also, drink a lot of fluids if you're running a fever in order to prevent dehydration.

Fourth Common Cold Myth

When you're outside for awhile when the weather's cold, do you get the sniffles? You've probably been told or thought that this will eventually lead to getting a cold. Well, you're wrong. The cold-causing viruses don't spread to you just because you get the chills, so you can't get colds just by feeling cold.

So the next time you get a cold, avoid succumbing to these common cold myths and seek treatment that'll actually help you get better faster and prevent you from spreading the illness to others.
