Blue and Red Light Therapy for Skin Healing

Two of the most recent technological breakthroughs in the context of skin healing and treatment of various skin problems are laser resurfacing and blue light therapy. Light therapy is still very less known across the world as compared to laser treatment that has gained widespread popularity in the last couple of years.

But what exactly is blue and red light therapy and how does it help the skin to heal and cure acne and other problems? As you must have guessed, the process is somewhat similar to that of treatment with the help of laser. However, there are some noticeable differences between the two procedures.

Blue light therapy can be applied at home unlike laser treatment. Although some laser systems are now available on the market that can be used at home, it is not recommended to use them without proper guidance. On the other hand, blue light therapy is a safe procedure and does not need assistance from a professional.

The procedure makes use of high-intensity LED bulbs and other equipment that is now widely available to be purchased. Many people have already benefited from the wonders of light therapy. All you have to do is expose your skin or affected areas to constant light coming from these bulbs for 10 to 15 minutes daily for a period of at least 3 months to cure acne and other problems completely.

Another difference between laser and light therapy is that light therapy causes very little discomfort or pain. Laser treatment is very painful particularly if you have sensitive skin and the technician has to use high energy for the treatment of your skin disorder. Laser hair removal and laser acne treatment have become very popular these days but these are very expensive clinical procedures as compared to light therapy which requires only one-time investment.

Blue and red light therapy is used to cure acne vulgaris, eczema and some other skin diseases, depression, jaundice, jet lag and lack of sleep. Many studies have shown that this kind of therapy is the most effective for the treatment of above-mentioned health disorders.

Before applying blue and red light therapy at home you need to be aware of some precautionary measures. Do not expose your skin to light therapy equipment for long durations of time if your skin is photosensitive. In addition to this, prolonged exposure to light may cause tanning. Side effects like headache and nausea are to be expected.

However, in spite of these disadvantages light therapy has been found to be a very effective and straightforward procedure for the treatment of various diseases.

Blue Light Therapy for Sleep Disorders?

@ 1:19 pm 03/12/08 by Allen
Please provide your references for this therapy. I specialize in Sleep Disorders medicine and am only aware of minimum lux levels as a means to reset the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus. The US Army research on fatigue countermeasures discounted transdermal bandwidth research over 10 years ago. Do you have more recent documentation to suggest otherwise?

Thank you for your comment. Yes sure I can provide you with references. Before doing that I would like you to note that the main theme of this article is to list down the benefits of blue light therapy for skin problems particularly acne vulgaris.

You can check out a detailed account on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_therapy

Here they have mentioned the exact sleep related problem and as I'm not an expert of sleep disorders I don't really understand what it means. The problem or disease is: delayed sleep phase syndrome. May be you'll be able to explain it further for the interest of readers.

Thanks again for sharing information.
