The Start of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Season
As the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season is now under way, each team expresses their own hopes, dreams and desires on what they want the 2008 season to bring. Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Penske Racing are seeing their dreams come true right before their eyes.
Speed week at Daytona has been a monumental week for the teams. Hendrick Motorsports newest team member, Dale Earnhardt JR dominated the track for the Budweiser Shoot Out and the first Gatorade Duel at the Daytona International Speedway. He was left as the only Hendrick car left standing at the Daytona 500 after Casey Mears tried to block Tony Stewart and went crashing into the wall sending out the caution flag with only 6 laps to go.
Joe Gibbs Racing showed the world what they could with a Toyota when Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart Finished one, two at the second Gatorade Duel. At the Daytona 500, Tony Stewart and Kyle Bush finished 3rd and 4th. Since JGR decided to go with Toyota in 2008, the gossip mill has been churning with questions on whether it was the right thing for the team since a Toyota has not won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race in over 50 years. Now with Joe Gibbs Racing running Toyota it makes you wonder if it is the car or just the drivers that have been running them.
Ryan Newman brought Penske Racing their first restrictor plate victory while ending his own 81 race dry spell at the 50th Daytona 500. Teammate Kurt Busch gave Newman a push in final lap sending him into victory lane for the first time since New Hampshire in September 2005. There is no doubt that Busch could have given Newman a run for the money coming out of turn 3 but choose to push his teammate to victory. That was the choice of a matured NASCAR driver and one we would not have seen Busch choose just a few years ago.
Chevrolet, Dodge, and Toyota are the front-runners so far for this 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup series, leaving Ford fans wondering if that is all they have to offer.
