Manchester: First Industrialized City

Manchester is a city in England that has come to be referred to in the past as the “first truly industrialized city”. It has a thriving economy, a rich and diverse cultural and art life, and a steadily rising business and finance sector. Manchester is a city that combines rich history with striking modern advancements. It is a new city, rising to distinction in the 18th century, declining during the mid 20th century and ultimately rising again in late 1980s, but it already has outstanding accomplishments and can rival almost any of the modern metropolises in the world.

This city, with its trouble-laden past especially in the mid 20th century is now steadily rising and growing more beautiful and prosperous from the ashes that once threatened to bring its decline. Now, Manchester is a modern capital that takes pride in striking architectural marvels, a stable economic life, and leading participation in business and finance. Next to London, it is now the second leading city in England.

It was textile manufacture and production that prospered the economy of Manchester in the 18th century. In fact, it was this region that helped create a major positive shift in the economy of England during that time, being the center of textile production and cotton processing. Eventually, Manchester developed a wide range of industries that made it without argument the first and the best industrial city in the world. Soon, engineering industries, chemical processing, trade and commerce began to rise and offered more opportunities to the growing populace.

World War II brought about a negative alteration on the economic and social advancements of Manchester, however. Much of the city was destroyed, including important historical sites like the Manchester Cathedral. The cotton spinning industry that improved its economy continued to decline, and people were out of jobs. But the city bounced back to renewed activity beginning in 1980’s when restoration began. After 1996, refurbishment of old buildings became imperative and soon, Manchester began to reclaim its rightful place in the industrialized world. The Manchester Cathedral was restored to its usual splendor. Nowadays, the City Council of Manchester is taking continued efforts at maintaining the unique historical and modern day attractions of the city.

The cultural life of Manchester is quite impressive. It boasts of remarkable
museums, imposing buildings, and various art galleries. There is the Imperial War Museum, Platt Hall or the Gallery of Costume, Manchester Jewish Museum, and the Urbis or the Museum of the Modern City. It also has a number of buildings considered to be architectural marvels, like the Manchester Cathedral, Shambles Square, Portico Library, and Minshull Street Police Station. Business and finance are also steadily growing, with a number of modern internet businesses taking lead. There are a number of website designers, web developers, and internet marketing agencies.

The symbol of Manchester is the worker bee, and this symbol is emblazoned around the city. This is truly a fitting symbol indeed for one city that once rose, fell, and then resurrected itself again to renewed pride and distinction.
