The Long List Of iPhone Complaints

It may be Time Magazine’s Invention of the Year for 2007. It may be the no. 1 item in everyone’s wish list right now. It may be topping popular queries in search engines all over the Internet. It may be the dream gadget of every living person on the planet today. But Apple’s new wonder toy isn’t free from iPhone complaints.

Indeed, there is a growing list of iPhone complaints, as evidenced by disgruntled users airing their dissatisfaction in the World Wide Web and in some print publications as well.

Do these iPhone complaints take anything away from Apple’s new centerpiece product?

Absolutely not! No product can claim perfection, and these iPhone complaints just represent areas of improvement that the Apple iPhone can address in latter firmware updates, if not, latter releases.

Should the prospective purchaser be wary about these iPhone complaints?

Most definitely! Though these iPhone complaints do not ruin the entirety of the product, the buyer should be the sole party to decide if the item is still worth the purchase, these issues being considered.

So, to guide those who are planning to buy an Apple iPhone, here is a list of some of the iPhone complaints that plague existing users:
  • Battery’s not removable. If the battery dies down and your unit’s not under warranty, you’re toast. The Apple iPhone’s battery is good for 300-400 charges. That’s around 2 years worth of battery life before it bids goodbye, forever. If the battery malfunctions, Apple’s willing to replace it. But if you have done something to void the warranty, you can be in a world of trouble.

  • Ringtone sound is quite low. Often, you won’t even hear your iPhone ring, more so, hear the assigned tone when someone sends a text message. This was apparently fixed in firmware update 1.1.2, but the ringtone sound can still benefit from being a little louder.

  • Auto-correction feature makes typing more difficult. The iPhone makes suggestions on what word you’re trying to spell when you’re typing it. Because the system uses the spacebar as the confirmation key if you’d like to use the suggested word, you’d often find yourself correcting a particular term just because you pressed the spacebar to proceed to the next word.

  • You can’t use music in your iTunes library as your custom ringtone. Believe it or now, this is one of the most popular (or unpopular) iPhone complaints.

  • Camera doesn’t have many features. There is no flash included. There is no zoom in, zoom out option either. It’s pretty basic stuff, which is quite a downer considering how sleek the iPhone is supposed to be.

  • You can’t forward the text messages you receive.

  • You can’t send nor receive MMS.

  • By default, you won’t be able to view certain files like .doc, .txt and .pdf documents. You can only view them as attachments. You can, eventually, download third party programs to allow you to open and view these files, but it would’ve been better if the iPhone was able to do this straight from the box.

  • No games included.

  • You cannot manually upload, move nor remove files. You won’t even be able to access files in your iPhone, save for the mp3s and .movs via iTunes.

This is a pretty long list of iPhone complaints, and it only includes the most bothersome ones.

Is the Apple iPhone still worth the purchase despite these iPhone complaints?

It’s really up to you. The Apple iPhone is a cool device that serves as a phone, primarily, and as an mp3 player and a portable internet device, secondarily. These purposes are excellently met. The iPhone complaints are merely about the auxiliary features of the device.

If you just want a phone that can play music and browse web pages, then this is the gadget for you, the list of iPhone complaints notwithstanding.

If you want all the bells and whistles to be perfect, then the list of iPhone complaints above can help you decide whether or not Apple’s poster gadget is the right one for you.

The Long List Of iPhone Complaints

Riza,

The iPhone is your friend. I gather you don't own one, so you can't appreciate what it can do for you.

I own an iPhone with a 1.1.3 firmware version on it, and several of the items you list are incorrect.

- It does not matter the number of charges you charge the battery. Check the information on Apple's site regarding the type of battery and the effect charging it (or discharging it) have on the unit. I asked this same question. In addition, if you've done something to void the warranty, well...that's your problem, isn't it.

- No problem with ringtones. As a matter of fact, I have to turn the volume down. Besides, the phone also vibrates, and just like any other cell phone, so if you're carrying in your pocket and muffling the ringtone sound, well, it's not a deficiency in the unit.

- You CAN use music in iTunes as your custom ringtones--there's a well documented method that involves cutting a song into a 40-second ringtone. Check www.tuaw.com for details.

- Regarding the camera limitations, I don't know anybody that uses a cell phone camera as their main picture-taking device. Typical pictures on cell phones are snapshots and within walking distance of the subject (read, a few feet), so if you want to zoom in or out, just step forward or backward a couple of steps. Zoomed pictures are digital zooms, very different from using a lens that moves back and forth, so I don't know what all the fuss is about zooming on cell phones. Other people complain about 2 mega pixels vs 3 mega pixels. None makes a big difference. The max picture size you can get out of a 2 or 3 mpx camera is a 5x7 picture anyway; a 4x6 is your best choice. Think about the size of pictures YOU print. Even if you don't print, the pictures show well on a computer screen and most of them are resized when shown on web sites.

Regards.

The Long List Of iPhone Complaints

I have an three week old iPhone, and I have to say I love it, but yes, there are some glaring problems with it. Although, strangely, I think your list misses a couple, and adds at least one that I think shouldn't be there.

Biggest complaint:

No MS Exchange support. Yeah, yeah, it's not meant for business users. But, It really seems like a no-brainer to have this. No, it NEEDS this.

Second, ring tone volume is definitely still low, even with 1.1.3. If it's in my pocket, I probably won't hear it. And vibrate is a joke.

MMS - Not too necessary, but would be nice.

Now, about the predictive capabilities of the keyboard: I had a terrible time with it, until I STOPPED trying to correct myself every two keystrokes. Quite the opposite of what you write, if I just let it do its thing and correct my mistakes for me, I can type pretty F'in fast. It's really very good at knowing what I'm trying to say. Really good.

You are right about it being a potential buyers responsibility to make the decision.

Go to an Apple store, and actually use an iPhone, try it out, in all its functions, and ask questions. Unlike other phones, you don't have to rely on what a salesman says and sales "reassurances" that "Yes...this phone can also do that", and then take it home and try to make it work. Take it for a test drive.

Because it is each consumer's choice, you should consider the freely available results of surveys by such as J.D. Power, on Customer Satisfaction of the iPhone buyers as compared to the alternatives. That iPhone purchasers are much more satisfied with the experience and customer service is well documented fact.

What other "new" phone has had such an uphill battle against the entrenched world of mobile communications? What other phone has been so successful that even unlocked, it has becoming globally viral? Why didn't all the established cellphone manufactures and carriers bring out something this good...with all their experience and knowledge? Especially, if it was such a "no big deal".

Remember, the iPhone is not just another cellphone. It is a powerful mobile computer, that and has been frequently improved by firmware and software updates. As of this month, the SDK, developer's toolkit is being released, and software developers are rushing to add anything missing...including native handling of other formats, text message forwarding, MMS...and even Exchange.

It is not planned or intended to be a cheap cellphone, a "giveaway", aimed at the corporate business community, or to take over the market.

Try it, if it doesn't fit your needs, or if you don't like it...don't buy it.

1. There is now an external battery for iPhone called mStation mobile juice pack for iPhone. It has a quite stylish case.
This would add another 250 hours of standby time, 8 hours talk time, 6 hours for internet, 7 hours for video playing and 24 hours for music playing. It's connected through iPhone plug.

2. You can get a really loud ringtone inside iPhone itself
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/Work - Home/Cell Phone Ringing.aif
Then convert the Ringing.aif file into MP3 or AAC using iTunes Importing feature.

3. Keypad auto-correction can be disabled starting with iFuntasticâ„¢ v4.0.0

4. Ringtone for iPhone is unlimited, you can convert any audio format to iPhone ringtone using iRinger.

5. Camera capabilities in iPhone will eventually expand, there is a video recording application, which allow faster frame rates, in here http://monsterandfriends.com/?q=node/50.

touch screen

@ 7:23 pm 06/09/08 by Amy
Two more issues I' ve experienced are:

- the phone will freeze up about once a week. It requires powering down to resume functionality. Perhaps something I should be doing daily anyway, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

- touch screen made of glass, or a glass-like material. I've dropped my phone a total of 2x. It now has 2 large cracks from top to bottom on the screen. Ruined, as far as I'm concerned. One would think a more durable material would be more suitable for a $400 phone.

i only have one complaint, its price. if im not mistaken an iphone sells for like $400 in the US. but in the philippines, it sells for 40,000 pesos, that is around $800 US.

it will be hard for buyers to purchase such luxurious mobile phone. and some individuals feel that its price is not worth its features
