Two different Religions: Jesus and Mohammad

Each figure is still worshiped and praised today. Their messages have impact of people’s lives all over the world. Christianity and Islam are continuing to grow throughout the world and the history behind both religions has been told to millions.

Mohammad’s Life

Mohammed literally means “the praised one”. Mohammed was born to a poor family. His family lived within a tribe. His mother and father died leaving his uncle to take of him. His uncle put him to work as a Shepard. As a teenager a Christian monk noticed markings on Mohammed’s body. The monk said the marks revealed that Mohammad was a prophet.

At 25 years of age Mohammad married as older woman named Khadijah. She was very supportive of him being a prophet. Mohammed spent time in solitude. After some time while Mohammed was on a solitary retreat the Angel Gabriel spoke to him. Gabriel told Mohammed to recite the Qur’an. After three years of revelations, God told Mohammed to speak publicly. Some people were against Mohammed; they ridiculed and even stoned him. But still Mohammed spread the word about Islam not giving up his purpose in life.

When the prophet turned 50, tragedies struck, his wife and uncle both passed away, this year marked the “"Year of Sorrows”," for Mohammad. The more he tried to tell people about the word of God the more people disagreed with him. Mohammed had some followers but still people disagreed with his cause. Then he experienced known as the “Night of Ascension”, he witnessed paradise and hell, he met with Jesus and Adam. God blessed him for everything he was doing. Still people were against his ideas, tension was brewing in Mecca. Mohammed secretly left Mecca and moved the Yathrib which means “"City of Prophet”."

There in Yathrib Mohammed wrote a constitution for the city and participated in politics. The tension grew and Mohammed people and the Meccans went to battle. God helped Mohammed defeat them by sending angels to help. After the battle the numbers of people who followed Mohammed grew. Mohammad continued to spread the word about Islam and his ideas.

In Mohammed’s “"Farewell Sermon”," he said, “"You must know that a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim and the Muslims are one brotherhood”" (Fisher, 2005, p.368). After making one last trip to the Ka’bath, Mohammed returned and became very ill. He was supposed to meet at “"The Fountain"” to give instructions to his successors, but he never made the meeting. According to Fisher (2005) Mohammad died in 632 CE. His friend, Abu Bakr was Mohammed’s temporary successor. But the legitimate successor was, in fact, ‘Ali, the prophet’s cousin.

Unfortunately, Mohammed had left no clear instructions, but he led his life in a way where people should live by his example. Mohammed was affectionate towards all living things. Everyday he demonstrated what a Muslim was supposed to live like. He never took credit for all the wonderful things he accomplished in his life. The only miracle Mohammed claims he took part in was the Qur’ranic teachings. Mohammed’s death was a tragedy to everyone. But people still embraced the prophet and spread the word about Islam and the Qu’ran. After the prophet’s death his successors created a council which later wrote all of the revelations down in a series, the first called the Fatiha. The prophet became a role model to all Muslims and his revelations from God are still being memorized today.

Jesus’'s Life

Jesus means “"God saves”." In Christianity the New Testament is extremely important because it tells the stories of Jesus which is their foundation. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. His mother, Mary, was a virgin. She was married to a man named Joseph, who was a carpenter in Bethlehem. While Mary was pregnant, everyone had to return to their home town for a census. Mary and Joseph tried to make the trip but ended up having Jesus being born in a stable. No stories were spoke of Jesus until the age of twelve, he then as a teenager Jesus began speaking with rabbis about religions. He had knowledge of the issues the world faced. He was also very knowledgeable about religion itself.

At 30, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. After Jesus was baptized his first disciples recognized him as Christ and started to become his followers. Jesus and his followers began to spread the word of Christianity. Jesus performed miracles for the less fortunate. He turned water in wine, cured a blind man, and helped a cripple walk again. He gave water to the thirsty and fed the poor. He lived by example of what a Christian should live like everyday. Living life as a Christian had very high standard. People were often discouraged by the standards. But Jesus ensured people to put faith into God. Jesus taught people to trust God, ask for forgiveness, and he will forgive.

As time went on Jesus began to see the future. He continued to show people he was the son of God by healing the sick. The Romans thought of Jesus as a threat against Rome. At the Last Supper Jesus knew his death was coming. He saw into the future and witnessed his crucifixion. Before his death, Jesus experienced a phenomenon, which was called the Transfiguration. This event was witnessed by three of his disciples. Although Jesus knew Jerusalem was dangerous he returned. As he knew his death was in the future he gave instructions before he died. He told his disciples to have faith and use wine and bread as communion to him. It was Judas who betrayed Jesus by telling the Romans of his whereabouts. This tragic event led to the arrest of Christ. Pontius Pilate sentenced him to death of torture and to hang on the cross. Jesus was hung on the cross on a hill called Golgotha, he hung there for hours. According to the gospels Jesus’s last words were, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”(Fisher, 2005, p.301). Jesus died between 27 and 33 CE.

Then another miracle occurred, Jesus arose from the dead. This historical event is called the Resurrection. Angels appeared to tell the women closest to Jesus that he had risen. His followers continued to see him; they ate supper with him and touched his wounds from the hanging. The Resurrection was a huge event in Christianity; this miracle showed people that Jesus was the son of God. After the Resurrection, three thousand people were baptized in one day leading to the event called the Pentecost. The disciplines continued to spread the word of Christianity.

Even after his death Jesus continues to be a role model for Christianity. Jesus is the ultimate being to look up to and worship as Christ Lord our Savior. As children grow up in a Christian homes, they are told of Jesus’s sacrificed of dying for our sins. They are taught songs about Jesus in church. He has become an idol to Christians everywhere. His stories about his teachings and miracles are still being spoken of today. Throughout the centuries art history has embraced him as a model. Even his picture is hung on many walls in homes today. Jesus’s story is so pure and good it will continue to grow and be retold in generations yet to come.

Barack Obama has a More Religiously Diverse Background

@ 10:21 am 03/22/08 by Sarah Beers
Barack Obama writes:

I was not raised in a religious household. For my mother, organized religion too often dressed up closed-mindedness in the garb of piety, cruelty and oppression in the cloak of righteousness. However, in her mind, a working knowledge of the world's great religions was a necessary part of any well-rounded education. In our household the Bible, the Koran, and the Bhagavad Gita sat on the shelf alongside books of Greek and Norse and African mythology.

On Easter or Christmas Day my mother might drag me to church, just as she dragged me to the Buddhist temple, the Chinese New Year celebration, the Shinto shrine, and ancient Hawaiian burial sites. In sum, my mother viewed religion through the eyes of the anthropologist; it was a phenomenon to be treated with a suitable respect, but with a suitable detachment as well.
