Nobel Peace Prize Loses Credibility with Al Gore
Al Gore was presented the Nobel Peace Prize alongside the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on Friday. He then decided to donate his half of the 1.5 million dollar prize to the Alliance for Climate Protection, which is a U.S. organization he founded that aims to persuade people to cut emissions and reduce global warming. I don't mean to be rude, but maybe he should keep part of his winnings to heat his mansion.
Sure this is my own personal opinion, but in my dictionary, his picture is displayed right next to the word, "hypocrite". There was a lot of discussion and debate about why Al Gore was the poster boy for the documentary, "The Inconvenient Truth", and I can see both sides of the story.
One side, a more conservative side, views his average electric and natural gas bills ($1,359, and $1,080 per month) that he accumulates from his mansion he owns in Nashville with open eyes. Viewing some statistics taken from
about.com's website, it is hard to ignore the fact that he does not practice what he preaches. The conservative side feels as if Al Gore is placing the burden on them t ohelp the environment so that he may keep living lavishly.
On the other side of the spectrum, a more liberal side sits. Most of which also do not support him, but they do support his motives. I find it hard for anyone to support
him per say, but it isn't difficult to understand why people applaud his efforts to clean up the world. After all, someone needs to step up to the plate and start motivating American households to make it their own personal responsibility to solve these environmental issues, and arguably, there is no politician in this world who could do this without giving the impression of hipocrisy.
I think Al Gore's motives should have been analyzed a bit better before the comittee nominated him in the first place. If he genuinely has an active interest in saving the earth's ecosystem, these topics would have never been addressed, and the public would welcome him with open arms. However that is not the case. He has been getting criticized ever since he filmed that documentary. To me, his motives are not authentic, and he certainly does not deserve such a prestigious award as the Nodel Peace Prize. He is just as much as a "publicity whore" as OJ Simpson.
Now let me take a moment to again address that he did
donate his winnings. He donated them to an organization that he owns and operates? Am I the only person who is amused by this? He donated his winnings back to himself!
With all of this said, I refuse to think that I am the only individual who feels Al Gore was not the best candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. Any politician is
not a good candidate and all should be void from nominations. Has the Nobel Peace Prize committee become so absolutely desperate that they chose this guy? Now there credibility is up there with David Letterman's Top Ten list!
